Deity, Matt Wesolowski: Book Review

Written by Nicole

A series which blows my mind with every jaw-dropping, 5-star read, this episode of Six Stories is not to be missed – Deity by Matt Wesolowski.

The plot:

A shamed pop star
A devastating fire
Six witnesses
Six stories
Which one is true?

When pop megastar Zach Crystal dies in a fire at his remote mansion, his mysterious demise rips open the bitter divide between those who adored his music and his endless charity work, and those who viewed him as a despicable predator, who manipulated and abused young and vulnerable girls.

Online journalist, Scott King, whose Six Stories podcasts have become an internet sensation, investigates the accusations of sexual abuse and murder that were levelled at Crystal before he died. But as Scott begins to ask questions and rake over old graves, some startling inconsistencies emerge: Was the fire at Crystal’s remote home really an accident? Are reports of a haunting really true? Why was he never officially charged?

My previous reviews here: The Changeling (book 3), Beast (book 4). I’ve also read and loved books 1 and 2, but if I posted a review for those, we’re bordering on a Wesolowski e-shrine.

Starting off with the first five pages – I’d already been stunned quiet where I couldn’t move/breathe. Instantly, you’re hooked. I also got quite nostalgic when reading “I’m Scott King” and it was like I’d been reunited with an old friend. I’ve invested a lot of time into this crime series and I have no regrets.

I’d probably say Deity is the darkest book in the series so far – based on the topic and folklore element (a reoccurring theme), this just really got under my skin and creeped me out. It has so many ‘wtf’ moments but has a horrifying way of making it feel so believable.

I’ve learnt from my previous mistakes and read this one early in the day, as it’s not a book you can read in the dark. Even with this, loud sounds made me jump, and I had to take a bit of a breather after one particular moment (creeped out even writing about it).

I’ve said it before but this podcast formatting is incredibly unique, pacey and addictive – it’s the type of book you want to savour but also can’t. I’m envious of people who haven’t read them yet (why??) and get to read them all in one go.

I did guess a few of the smaller aspects but it still ended up being unpredictable and shocking with its conclusion. I loved the answers that were given and also the meaning behind the plot – yes, it’s a creepy crime fiction, but it’s also soooo much more.

Con: these books are too few and far between. I need one once a month to be kept happy.

Highly, highly recommend all of the books in the series (book 3 is still my favourite, but with Deity coming in second). No author leaves you hanging on their every word like Wesolowski.
