Another fantastic thriller from Jean Levy, Other Women demands your attention.
The plot:
Sophie thought that she and Jonah were happy – with a little house, a baby and future planned – until one day, she discovers that Jonah has been hiding terrible truths from her. As her life falls apart, handsome English teacher Sam appears to offer comfort, and she finds a new friend in Suzie.
But why have they turned up now?
As the lies build up, and Jonah’s past threatens to destroy Sophie and her daughter, can anyone be trusted?
I can’t get enough of Levy’s writing
I went into this book having high expectations because I ordered Levy’s last book What Was Lost (my review here). AND IT DELIVERED. It’s definitely a different reading experience, and where I put What Was Lost as a high 5-star, Other Women is a high 4-star for me.
Despite it being shorter in length, it did feel like a longer read, and not as fast-paced. It definitely has its intense moments, and a fantastic action scene where I couldn’t read quickly enough! Other Women is a detailed and multi-layered thriller. It’s not your typical ‘holiday’ thriller, where you can read it quickly and forget the ending.
If I could only point out 1 thing that Levy excels at (there’s definitely more than 1 thing), it’s writing characters. They come to life and are incredibly (and often scarily) realistic. I was pretty unsure about the protagonist, Sophie – she’d been through an ordeal and immediately started seeing someone else who she hardly knew? Sounds like danger to me.
The other characters all play a key part and it’s more than just ‘other women’.
The plot may appear pretty predictable, but that’s old news within the first 50-odd pages. It’s fascinatingly done with additional mini-stories weaving throughout, and you’re fed bits of information every now and again.
I can’t get enough of Levy’s writing, however it did seem jilted and jumped around a bit during the first half, taking a while to get into, however things start making sense the more you read.
A really incredibly thriller which will make you think – it’s topical and at times, difficult to read, with a fantastic ending.
Both What Was Lost and Other Women need to be on your radar if you’re a thriller fan, and Levy is an automatic-buy author for me.
